Social media is redefining it to operational redevelopment. However, I would define it as using all available resources efficiently & effectively to add value to ur clients time factor. Services & products r being created to yield simplicity which is a function of time.
I think operational excellence picks up on how you said it: "things click". They come together naturally. You don't have to think about where something is, it is where you want it to be. This is easier to do is a physical setting like a retail environment, harder to do with most non-physical businesses. Seemlessly meeting customer expectations by anticipating what they really need (not want) is something to strive to deliver. It requires planning and understanding the customer and environment however it is defined.
When people ask me if an event is running smoothly, I reply "does it look smooth?". If the answer is yes I say that of course it is. If they say other wise, I get to work. If it looks good it probably is.
